Train ticket types and rail fares for travel to London, Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Manningtree, Diss, Stowmarket, Cambridge

Introducing simpler rail fares - From 18 May 2008, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) is streamlining its fares. The changes will happen in two phases. The first phase, will see variously branded tickets that have to be bought before travel for use on a specific train, all branded as 'advance', with common terms and conditions across the UK rail network no matter what operator you travel with.

Terms such as 'super advance' and 'business advance' will dissappear and discounts on all railcards not previously offered, will now be applicable.

The second phase will take place 7 September 2008 when walk-up fares (that you don't have to buy in advance) will be grouped into 'anytime' or 'off-peak'.

Advance

Advance tickets - buy in advance, subject to availability. These are single (one-way) fares offering great value for money on many longer distance journeys. You must book in advance and travel on a specific train service. View our Advance tickets section for full details of the 'advance' ticket range including ticket terms.

Anytime

Buy any time, travel any time (walk up and buy). These are the most flexible fares as there are no time restrictions on when you can travel. Perfect if you need complete flexibility. View our Anytime tickets section for details of the anytime ticket range including anytime ticket terms and conditions.

Off-Peak

Buy any time, travel off-peak (Cheap Day, Saver, Anglia Plus, One Day Rover and Travelcard). These are cheaper fares for travelling when it's less busy, so they have restrictions on when you can travel. View our Off-Peak tickets section for details of the anytime ticket range including anytime ticket terms and conditions.
