How to buy your train ticket

Buying your train ticket Online

National Express offer an online travel booking facility in conjunction with thetrainline.com where you can check train times, fares and purchase a train ticket for travel to anywhere on the UK rail network. Payment is by credit or debit card. Your rail tickets can either be posted direct to your home or can be collected at selected stations using our self service ticket machines.

When purchasing a ticket online for the first time you will be asked to create an account and sign in with the details you have created. You will receive an email confirming your account details. After the first purchase every time you purchase a ticket you will be asked to enter those details. If you have already registered to book train tickets online - access your My Account page here.

Collecting tickets at the station?

If you have booked your tickets with us online, your ticket(s) will be ready for collection just 2 hours after ordering.

A number of National Express train stations have self service ticket machines called Ticket Xpress (also known as FastTicket) available, although some require you to pick your ticket up at the ticket office instead.

Find out how to collect your ticket from a self service ticket machine here

Buying train tickets at the station

The majority of our stations have self-service ticketing machines called Ticket Express, normally located near the station entrance or ticket office. You can purchase day-of-travel tickets for up to four adults and four children to all UK national rail destinations. These accept credit/debit cards as well as cash. Please note we do not accept Solo or Electron card payments.

Our ticket offices accept payment in cash, by cheque (supported by a valid cheque card), most credit/debit cards and National Rail Travel Vouchers. Cheques should be made payable to 'London Eastern Railway' if you are purchasing your ticket at a National Express ticket office.

For details of ticket office opening times, go to the Stations and route map section, and select your station from the drop down box.

Buying train tickets over the telephone

We provide a facility for purchasing or renewing season and other tickets for travel on National Express services or elsewhere on the National Rail network by telephone using a credit or debit card. Simply call our Customer Services Centre on 0845 600 7245. Your ticket will be sent to you by first class post, but please allow 5 working days from the date of ordering (a cheque may be used for payment, but please allow 3 weeks from the date of ordering).

Please note we do not accept Solo or Electron card payments.

You can book by phone right up to the evening before you travel and elect to collect your tickets at a station although earlier booking will help you to obtain the ticket best suited to your needs. This facility is available if you are starting your journey from one of the following East Anglia stations:

Norwich, Diss, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Liverpool Street, Bury St Edmunds, Harwich International, Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft.

You can call to book your ticket in advance during the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday between 08.00 and 22.00

  • Weekends and Bank Holidays between 09.00 and 18.00

  • *We are not open on Christmas Day or Boxing Day

Buying train tickets on the train - Journeys not covered by penalty fares

For journeys where Penalty Fares do not apply, you may purchase your ticket on the train. However, if you get on a train without a valid ticket at a station where the ticket office is open, or where a self-service ticket machine is available and in working order, you will have to buy the full single or full return fare for your journey. You will not be able to benefit from a railcard discount if purchasing a ticket under these circumstances except in the case of the Disabled Persons Railcard.

Find out more about which journeys are covered by Penalty Fares.
